My wife and I wanted to buy our grandsons, 3 and 5, a little electric car that was safe and both could ride, for Christmas. These are very popular with kids.

We first searched on dedicated sites and looked at Ferraris, BMWs, Mini-Coopers, you name it, there seems to be a toy that represents it. We were discouraged by high prices ($400 or more was not unusual) and few of them allowed a passenger. Then we went to a large and popular discount store and saw a toy Mustang for $250. Upon close inspection it looked like it was very poor quality, which made us wonder if all were like this.

Next stop Amazon. At the time (just before Xmas 2010) Amazon only had a couple of electric toy cars, if I recall correctly, and I do remember that it was the only electric car eligible for Amazon Prime (I am a Prime member). We were lucky! It seated two and was priced at only $250. Unsure about the quality, we took a chance and ordered it.

When it arrived my son-in-law and I unpacked it for assembly. It comes mostly assembled, electric drive-train, transmission and wheels already in place (thank goodness – that would have a hassle). Assembly consists of mostly adding external parts like the windshield, steering wheel and steering assembly, seats, decals, and so forth.

I was relieved to see that the toy was very, very sturdy. The body and wheels (tires) are made of durable, tough plastic (good thing too, the first journey attempted by my 5-year old grandson sent the Jeep head-on into a tree, on purpose I think). It is not thin and it is not flimsy at all. I look a close look at the two electric motors (one for each year wheel) and the gearbox/transmission (2 forward, 1 reverse) and they were mounted very solidly. The wiring harness looked like a wiring harness from an actual car. Most of all, though, I was delighted when I saw the battery. It is a large, heavy, sealed (important) traditional acid battery with a high quality charger. I know something about batteries and this is about the best you can do for a toy like this. (If you are not familiar with such batteries, there is pretty good chance that the alarm system for your home has this type of battery for a backup – and how often do you have to replace it)?

And the kids love it – absolutely love it. Its plastic wheels do not grip well on wet grass or any kind of slope. It works best on flat concrete or asphalt. (If you ever see a child climb into one of these things for the first time, it becomes clear rather quickly that they do not have clue about how a steering wheel works. That can be pretty funny and reminds us that children aren’t born knowing how to steer).

This thing came in a huge box (4′ by 2″ by 2′ or so) and was heavy. I ordered it on two-day delivery on Prime, free shipping!! Even though it was the week before Xmas, this monster box arrived on my porch within two days, no charge!! Yay Amazon!

The Jeep Wrangler (JK) is a convertible sports utility vehicle (SUV) available in either the traditional two-door body style or the four-door style of the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited introduced in 2007. For the 2010 model year, all Wranglers received a facelift, the most prominent aspect being the all-new soft top, which is more convenient to fold and open than past editions.

The Wrangler is available at five trim levels, X, Rocky Mountain Edition (RME), X-S, Sahara, and Rubicon. The X is a bare bones package that lacks even the most basic amenities. Customers can purchase it as is, although Jeep intends it as a platform for a completely individualized JK. The RME is a Canada-only version of the X platform, which includes larger tires, body-colored fenders, black tube sidesteps, and an in-dash six-CD changer.

The X-S or Sport trim is the standard package for both body styles. It includes 16-inch steel wheels, a tilt steering wheel, a folding soft top, cloth upholstery, a one-piece flip-and-fold removable rear seat, fog lamps, and a six-speaker audio system with CD player and auxiliary audio jack.

The Unlimited Sport adds rear doors, a larger fuel tank, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, and air-conditioning standard. Under the hood, all JKs have a 3.8-liter V6 engine that pounds out 202 horsepower and 237 footpounds of torque. Jeep pairs it with a six-speed manual transmission with hill-start assist, but a four-speed automatic is optional.

The Rubicon trim is a four-wheel-drive off-road package. In addition to the Sport’s standard equipment, the Rubicon gets 17-inch alloy wheels, deluxe off-road tires, rock rails, a reinforced front axle, a special low-range transfer case, an electronic stabilizer bar disconnect feature, electronically locking front and rear differentials, and an Infinity stereo system that includes satellite radio and a subwoofer. The Rubicon also gets cruise control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. These items are available on the Sport as options.

The Power Convenience Group (PCG) is a JK option package available for the Sport and Rubicon. It adds keyless entry, power locks, power windows, and a security alarm. The Sahara trim level, which is the “luxury” edition of the JK, includes the PCG standard along with all of the Sport’s standard equipment. On top of these items, Jeep adds 18-inch wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, upscale exterior trim and visual cues, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, tubular side steps, and the same Infinity audio system that is included in the Rubicon.

The three-piece modular hard top, called the “Freedom Top,” is available on all JK models. Jeeps that get the Freedom Top also get a rear window defroster and wiper, tinted windows, and a storage bag. There is a six-CD/DVD changer audio system with computer interface available as an option on all trims that don’t have the Infinity system. The Rubicon and Sahara can be equipped with a hard-drive-based navigation system that includes digital music storage, real-time traffic, and musical accessory options. The Sport and Rubicon have optional half-metal doors with plastic windows available. This option and the PCG are mutually exclusive. Lastly, a towing package is available on all JK models.
